چکیده

The idea that the Dmrt1 gene provides a unifying sex-determining mechanism in non-mammalian vertebrates is left high and dry by recent observations in fish.

Sex in birds is chromosomally based, as in mammals, but the sex chromosomes are different and the mechanism of avian sex determination is a long-standing mystery. In the chicken and other birds, the homogametic sex is male (ZZ) and the heterogametic sex is female (ZW). Two hypotheses have been proposed for the mechanism of avian sex determination. The W (female) chromosome may carry a dominant-...

Dmrt1 expression in response to estrogen treatment in a reptile with temperature-dependent sex determination.

Dmrt1 has been implicated as an important factor in sex determination in all classes of vertebrates, including reptiles with temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). Specifically, early embryonic expression of Dmrt1 appears to be an integral part of normal testicular development in vertebrates. Recently, a number of TSD studies have placed Dmrt1 expression at the top of a short list of pu...

Evolution of DMY, a newly emergent male sex-determination gene of medaka fish.

The Japanese medaka fish Oryzias latipes has an XX/XY sex-determination system. The Y-linked sex-determination gene DMY is a duplicate of the autosomal gene DMRT1, which encodes a DM-domain-containing transcriptional factor. DMY appears to have originated recently within Oryzias, allowing a detailed evolutionary study of the initial steps that led to the new gene and new sex-determination syste...

Problems of Birds Sex Determination

Sex determination system in birds is characterized by a homo-(Neognatae) and heteromorphic (Paleognatae) sex chromosomes. Heterogametic sex is female (ZZ/ZW system). DMRT1 gene is a gene regarded as a main male sex determining factor in this group of animals. The question remains about the participation of other factors (HEMOGEN, AMH etc.) in appearance of testis, and the role of steroid hormon...
